Heer Generalmajor\'s Leather Greatcoat

Heer Generalmajor's Leather Greatcoat

Officers were entitled to wear a leather version of the standard greatcoat as an optional item. Officer’s and certain senior NCO’s were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms. Generally speaking officers bought high quality uniform items. Regulations dictated the only insignia to be worn on the leather greatcoats were to be slip on shoulder boards.

High quality grey colored leather construction, double breasted style. Full length greatcoat with fold back lapels and a lay down collar. The coat features two rows of five front closure buttons all made of pebbled metal with a gold paint wash. The coat has two slash front hip pockets with fold over flaps. The sleeves have deep fold back French cuffs. To each shoulder is a pair of slip on generalmajor's shoulder straps made of golden and silver bullion on red cloth backing. Each strap is slipped in Place and buttoned in Place with a gold washed pebbled button. Each button is attached with a screw metal device. The reverse of the coat has leather reinforcement sewing to protect the wearer from chafing.

Inside is completely lined with grey rayon. There is two buttoned down pocket flaps and a closed slit-openining for the still present dagger hanger to pass through. To the neck is a hardly readable tailors label machine sewn in Place.

The greatcoat shows clear signs of age and use, inside and out. The leather is a bit dry and the liner shows color fading and minor stains from use. The coat was missing the shoulder straps when we got it and has been added by us. The attachment device was however still present in one of the pockets. No damage or mendings though!

Well used greatcoat for a general (now generalmajor) in still highly collectible condition!!
