German Cross In Gold With Award Case of Issue

 

 

The War Order of the German Cross was introduced by Adolf Hitler on September 28TH 1941 in two classes of Gold and Silver. The Gold class Cross was awarded to military personnel for exceptional acts of bravery or achievement in combat while the Silver class was awarded for distinguished acts of service in the war effort. The German Cross was to be worn on the lower, right, breast of the service tunic and field blouse.

 

This cross is made of die struck Tombak with black and red enamel work. The cross features a double overlaid eight point sunburst. The center has a silver washed circular panel with a raised, black enameled swastika encompassed by an gilt washed laurel leaf wreath with the impressed introduction date "1941" to the bottom on a red enamel base. The red enamel base is visible as a fine outline to either side of the wreath.

 

Reverse features four dome headed retaining rivets. Soldered barrel type hinge on a base plate, heavy broad tapered pin and heavy soldered catch all intact. Reverse of pin with impressed manufacturer's numerical code "20" indicating manufacture by "C. F. Zimmermann, Pforzheim". The cross is in very good, Close to mint condition with a light age patina.

 

The cross is housed in its original case of issue. The case has a fold open top lid. Bottom part has functional push buttom. The case is made of Wood with a black leather imitation cover. When open, the case has White satin/silk insert to the top half and black flock covered lower bottom part. The case is in very good condition, outside shows light chafe wear to the edges. Inside has a clear "ghost" mark from the german cross.  

 

Close to impossible to upgrade this set!!
