Iron Cross 1'st Class 1939 Screw Back L/16 With LDO Case of Issue

On September 1st 1939 Hitler reinstituted the Iron Cross series of awards in the First and Second Classes and established the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. The first class medal was for award to personnel who performed three to five acts of bravery in combat, and had already been awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. Recipients of an Iron Cross were permitted with the proper documentation to privately purchase a jeweler’s copy of the award at their own expense if so desired.

This is a private purchase cross, 1939 pattern. Die struck, iron and nickel/silver plated alloy construction cross. Three piece, Brass core and a two piece alloy frame. The plain reverse has a central screw and above the screw is a raised pin to the center of the top arm to prevent the cross from rotating when worn. The cross comes complete with a silver washed alloy screw back plate. Reverse is maker marked stamped "L/16" for "Steinhauer & LĂĽck, LĂĽdenscheid."  The cross is in good still used condition and retains about 99% of the original black paint to the Iron core. The silver frame shows only minor age tarnish.

The cross comes housed in it's original case of issue. The cross is made of Wood with black leather imitation cover made of paper. Fold open top lid, with padded "LDO" marked White satin interior. The bottom lid has a black flock cover with a depression to the center which fits the Cross screw -ack reverse perfectly. The case shows light signs of age and chafe-wear.

Early maker marked Cross with desirable screw-back device and perfectly matching Award case of issue!!

This cross has a compelling "been there" look and will make a great display on a used combat tunic!!
