German Eastern Front Commemorative Cross 1914-1918

German Eastern Front Commemorative Cross 1914-1918

German Eastern Front Commemorative Cross 1914-1918

The Cross was instituted in 1920 by the Ehrenbundes Sächsischer Weltkriegsteilnehmer (Honour Association of Saxon World War Veterans) and the Kameradschaftsbundes Deutscher Ost- und Westfrontkämpfer (Comradeship Association of German Western and Eastern Front Combatants).

Veterans could purchase the Cross after approval following review of their military documents. Since many qualifying former soldiers were experiencing economic hardship at the time, the number issued was limited and the Cross is, as a consequence, quite rare.

The cross is made of Gilt metal and green enamel Maltese cross with gilt crossed swords between the arms, with eyelet for ribbon suspension, the face with a circular central white medal medallion imposed bearing a German helmet facing right on a stippled ground, oak leaves above and below, within a ring inscribed "FÜR DEUTSCHLANDS EHRE IM OSTEN" (For German’s Honour in the East), the left and right arms dated "1914" and "1918" respectively in gilt numerals the reverse plain gilt with maker’s mark ‘FLECK&SOHN / HAMBURG 3 / GES. GESCH. The medal has the hard to find, correct ribbed, rayon ribbon.

Pretty scarce cross in very good condition!!
