WW1 Sachsen Universal Infantry NCO's M1917 Field Cap

On its introduction the M1907 "Kratzchen" field cap for enlisted personnel was issued with a branch of service colored centerband and piping. In 1917 the "Kratzchen" field cap was modified by discontinuing the branch of service color centerbands and replacing them with a less visible green centerband for all branches of service but both versions of the caps were worn concurrently.

This is a tailor made cap for either an NCO or Officer. Field grey wool construction cap with green/grey wool piping to the top crown edge and a green/grey wool centerband. The front center of the cap band has a stamped magnetic tri-color cockade in red, green and White for Sachsen. To the center of the cap, above the cap band is a national tri-color Prussian cockade. The Prussian cockade was missing when we received the cap but we managed to find a perfectly matching one and inserted it in the old insertion holes from the old one. Without mention this, no one would ever notice!. The cap has a cloth visor sewn, a nice and clever solution seen from period photos taken later in the war 1917-1918.

The interior of the cap is fully lined in white cotton. The lining is stamped with several different markings. Manufacturers marking as well as a couple of stamps with un-known purpose for us.

The cap shows clear signs of age and use. Inside, lining shows age/use yellow toning. There is Three small mendings to the lining which most likely is made after the war.

The cap size is about 56.5 - 57.

Super nice and scarce visored M17 cap with clear signs of use!!
