German WWI Helmet Cover
In January of 1917 the war ministry authorized the testing of white colored canvas helmet covers which were to be issued to troops in snowy regions of the front. On February 14th of 1917 the war ministry also authorized the production of earth and field gray colored canvas helmet covers. Some discussion was made between High Command and the General Supply Offices as to whether these covers were to be worn strictly by sentries and patrols or were all soldiers to be issued with such a cover. It appears no decision was ever made, but contemporary records indicate 800,000 covers were issued.
Very scarce german WWI helmet cover made of beige colored canvas. Made of 4 peices of canvas, each overlapping eachother and machine sewn in Place. The front part has extra folds machine sewn half way from botton to the top to fit the shape of the helmet. Edges is folded up and machine sewn in Place. To each side is circular holes with a heavy leather reinforcement, both hand sewn with heavy threads. Positioned arround the inside edge is retaining hooks, six in total. The hooks has been hand stitched in Place and are covered with the same type of thick canvas as the rest of the cover is produced with.
The cover shows clear signs of real use and age. Rather heavy soiling all over with two wear holes one to the reverse and the other located to the right front side. The cover also has a oily / fat feeling to the touch. All in all well used condition, this one has seen some action for sure!
